Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Volunteering “a thing”

Studies have shown that Volunteering can be a boost to your self-confidence and life satisfaction, in addition to this your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. But, we think that the number one benefit of volunteering is that it connects you to others via your impact you have on the community you choose to serve. By volunteering with even the smallest tasks each of us can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals, and organizations in need.

Are we able to volunteer as a family?

While it might be life’s ultimate challenge to coordinate work, social, school commitments, sporting fixtures and cultural engagements, volunteering as a family has many worthwhile benefits. Children watch everything you do. By giving back to the community, you show them first-hand how volunteering makes an impact, and how good it feels to help other people and animals to effect change.

Can I volunteer with my friends?

Some opportunities are suitable for group volunteering for example, beach or environment clean-up days, tree planting or painting classrooms, and you can RSVP for your group or join a group on the day. You will find information about upcoming opportunities on our website, and you are free to choose the activity which most resonates with you.

My children need Community Hours for school, can they join this program?

Your children, your clients’ children, all and any children are welcome to join this volunteer platform. The IEB (Independent Examinations Board) has a requirement for a verified portfolio of evidence of social engagement, upliftment and volunteering as part of the Matric Life Orientation curriculum. The parameters as set by the IEB are met in all respects by this platform. All volunteering engagements are independently verified, and each verified volunteering commitment has a certificate of confirmation which can be downloaded and printed for submission to school, to the IEB and attached to university applications. The volunteering opportunities are also accepted by Presidents Award participants, making this program even more exciting for school going learners.

How much time do I need to volunteer?

This is really up to you. We would suggest that you carefully consider the amount of commitment you are able to give before choosing your volunteering role, and that you communicate this to the organisation when you sign up to volunteer with them.

Can I volunteer from home?

Of course you can! Volunteering form home is an increasingly popular way of volunteering, and you can search ‘Virtual Volunteering” on the website for ways you can volunteer in this way.

How old do I have to be to Volunteer?

In some instances there are age limits for volunteering, some organisations set age restrictions that reflect the level of responsibility or experience needed. You will see notes on our opportunities which will give you a guideline as to the age appropriateness of each volunteering experience, the rule of thumb is that in most cases volunteers under the age of 13 are required to have adult supervision at the time of volunteering.

When it comes to volunteering, passion and positivity are the two requirements which are really crucial.

It is true that learning a new skill is a wonderful benefit to volunteering, it is not prerequisite for a fulfilling volunteer experience. Possibly the most important personal skills you can bring to any volunteer engagement are compassion, an open mind, a “can do and will do” approach to the tasks you might be assigned, and a ultimately a positive attitude.
